The route

What to know before you go

The Sentier des Roches is one of the most spectacular paths in the Vosges, and one of the most exposed. Cut into the cliffs of the Schlucht cirque, it strings together narrow ledges, stairs and metal walkways along the rock face. The view over the valley is superb, but the terrain is unforgiving: some sections drop straight into the void with no protection. It is best kept for sure-footed walkers, in dry weather. The path was built in 1910 and 1911 by volunteers of the Club Vosgien, at the initiative of Heinrich Strohmeyer, to link the Col de la Schlucht to the Frankenthal cirque.

The route, step by step

A breakdown of the loop with the key landmarks and distances.

  1. Start at the Col de la Schlucht

Large free car park on the D417, around 1,138 m. The path sets off along the slope towards the cirque, following the Club Vosgien waymarks.

  2. The path carved into the rock

    ≈ 3 km

The spectacular part: narrow ledges, cut steps, stairs and walkways along the Krappenfels face. Exposed passages, take them steadily.

  3. The Frankenthal cirque

The path opens onto the glacial cirque of the Frankenthal, greener and more open. A farm-inn nearby depending on the season.

  4. Loop back

Several ways back to the Col de la Schlucht: along the ridge road, over the Hohneck, or via the Schiessrothried lake. Factor the loop into the total time.

Recommended gear

The minimum list to head out with confidence, even in good weather.

  • Hiking boots with good grip
  • No fear of heights (exposed sections)
  • Windproof layer and water
  • Not advised for young children or dogs
  • Avoid in the rain: the rock gets slippery

Our tips for the day

  • 1The path is closed from 1 November to 30 April by municipal order, and impassable as soon as snow or frost sets in.
  • 2In wet weather, postpone: accidents happen every year on the wet rock.
  • 3Not advised if you suffer from vertigo, or with young children or a dog.
  • 4Set off early: it is one of the busiest paths in the range and the car park fills up fast.
  • 5Check the forecast the day before (Météo-France or meteovosges.fr) before committing.
